Description

Hydrangea quercifolia 'Gatsby Star' is a stunning cultivar of oakleaf hydrangea that captivates with its distinctive star-shaped flower clusters and lush foliage. This variety is particularly celebrated for its ability to enhance gardens during the summer and autumn months, providing a vibrant display that draws the eye. The large, white blooms emerge from mid to late summer, creating a striking contrast against the backdrop of the garden. As the season progresses, these flowers transition to soft pink tones, offering a delightful change in color that adds depth and interest to the landscape.

In addition to its beautiful flowers, 'Gatsby Star' showcases deeply lobed leaves that resemble those of an oak tree. These leaves undergo a stunning transformation in the fall, turning brilliant shades of red, orange, and burgundy, which further enriches the seasonal palette of any garden. The plant's compact and rounded growth habit makes it an excellent choice for smaller spaces or as a focal point in a mixed border. Its well-branched structure not only contributes to its aesthetic appeal but also ensures that it maintains a tidy appearance throughout the growing season.

This hydrangea thrives in a range of light conditions, from partial shade to full sun, although it benefits from some afternoon shade in hotter climates to protect its foliage from scorching. It prefers moist, well-drained soil that is slightly acidic to neutral, enriched with organic matter to support its growth. For optimal health and shape, pruning should be carried out right after flowering, which encourages robust new growth for the following season. Hardy in UK climates and generally resistant to pests and diseases, 'Gatsby Star' is a low-maintenance option that gardeners can rely on for years of beauty and enjoyment. How to Grow
Hydrangea quercifolia prefers a sunny or semi shaded position, with shelter from cold, drying winds. Grow hydrangea plants in any rich fertile, moist soil. Improve the soil prior to planting by adding with plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Alternatively plant hydrangea quercifolia in patio containers in soil based compost.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Water regularly until plants are fully established. Leave the faded hydrangea flower heads in place until the new buds swell in spring to protect the delicate buds from frost damage. Prune after flowering, reducing the stems to restrict their growth to the available space and to improve the shape of the plant. If necessary, Hydrangea paniculata will tolerate hard pruning of the oldest stems to a few buds from ground level. This will also encourage larger flower heads to be produced. After pruning hydrangeas, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes, harmful if eaten.
