Description

Hydrangea quercifolia 'Gatsby Girl' is an exquisite cultivar of oakleaf hydrangea, celebrated for its impressive, large flower panicles and striking foliage that bring both texture and visual interest to any garden setting. The plant produces conical clusters of flowers that begin as pristine white and gradually transition to soft pink hues, offering a captivating display that evolves throughout the seasons. This blooming period typically spans from mid to late summer, with the blossoms often persisting into the autumn months, providing a delightful extension of color as the garden begins to shift into its fall palette.

In addition to its stunning floral display, 'Gatsby Girl' showcases deeply lobed, oak-shaped leaves that contribute to its ornamental charm. As autumn approaches, these leaves transform into a vibrant tapestry of red, orange, and burgundy, enhancing the overall aesthetic of the landscape. The plant's compact, well-branched, and rounded growth habit makes it an ideal choice for smaller gardens or as a standout specimen plant, allowing it to fit seamlessly into various design schemes while still making a bold statement.

This hydrangea thrives in conditions ranging from partial shade to full sun, although providing some afternoon shade in hotter climates is advisable to prevent leaf scorch. It flourishes best in moist, well-drained soils that are slightly acidic to neutral and rich in organic matter, ensuring optimal growth and health. To maintain its shape and promote vigorous new growth, pruning should be done immediately after flowering. With its hardiness and relative resistance to pests and diseases, 'Gatsby Girl' proves to be a dependable choice for gardeners in the UK, promising beauty and resilience in any garden. How to Grow
Hydrangea quercifolia prefers a sunny or semi shaded position, with shelter from cold, drying winds. Grow hydrangea plants in any rich fertile, moist soil. Improve the soil prior to planting by adding with plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Alternatively plant hydrangea quercifolia in patio containers in soil based compost.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Water regularly until plants are fully established. Leave the faded hydrangea flower heads in place until the new buds swell in spring to protect the delicate buds from frost damage. Prune after flowering, reducing the stems to restrict their growth to the available space and to improve the shape of the plant. If necessary, Hydrangea paniculata will tolerate hard pruning of the oldest stems to a few buds from ground level. This will also encourage larger flower heads to be produced. After pruning hydrangeas, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes, harmful if eaten.
