Description

Hydrangea paniculata ‘Living Sugar Rush’ is a delightful medium-sized panicle hydrangea, celebrated for its compact growth habit and stunning white flower panicles. These conical clusters of flowers bloom from July to September, maintaining their pristine white hue throughout the entire 100-day flowering period without fading to pink. This remarkable feature ensures that the plant remains a focal point in the garden, providing a continuous display of elegance and beauty during the summer months.

The shrub develops a bushy, rounded form characterized by strong, upright stems and lush, ovate mid-green leaves. This structure not only adds to its aesthetic appeal but also contributes to its overall resilience. ‘Living Sugar Rush’ thrives in a variety of conditions, flourishing in full sun to partial shade and adapting well to different soil types, including clay, loam, and both acidic and alkaline environments. Its hardiness is particularly noteworthy, as it can withstand temperatures as low as -30 °C, making it a reliable choice for gardens across the UK without the need for winter protection.

In terms of maintenance, this hydrangea is relatively low-effort, requiring only a simple pruning in late winter or early spring to encourage vigorous new growth and robust flower panicles. This straightforward care routine allows gardeners to enjoy the beauty of ‘Living Sugar Rush’ with minimal fuss, making it an excellent addition to any landscape. Whether used as a standalone specimen or incorporated into mixed borders, this hydrangea promises to bring charm and long-lasting interest to outdoor spaces. How to Grow
Hydrangea paniculata prefers a sunny or semi shaded position, with shelter from cold, drying winds. Grow hydrangea plants in any non alkaline, fertile, moist soil. Improve the soil prior to planting by adding with plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info

Water regularly until plants are fully established.

Pruning:

Hydrangea paniculata flowers on the current season’s growth and will flower better if pruned annually. Establish a permanent framework to the desired height and every spring prune back all growth to this framework. At the same time, remove any dead or damaged growth.

For even larger flowers on erect stems, plants can be pruned back to a very low framework of only about a foot high.

After pruning hydrangeas, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes, harmful if eaten.
