Description

Hydrangea aspera 'Goldrush' is a remarkable deciduous shrub that captivates with its striking golden-yellow leaves and plush, velvety flower clusters. This unique variety infuses a touch of the tropics into shaded borders and woodland gardens, ensuring that it remains a focal point throughout the seasons. The combination of its vibrant foliage and dramatic blooms creates a dynamic visual appeal, making it an excellent choice for gardeners looking to enhance their landscapes with a splash of color and texture.

In midsummer, 'Goldrush' showcases its large, flat lacecap flowers, which feature central florets in shades of mauve to violet, surrounded by delicate, soft pink sterile florets. The foliage begins its journey in spring with a brilliant golden-yellow hue, transitioning to a more subdued yellow-green as summer progresses. This gradual change not only adds depth to the garden but also provides a striking contrast against the darker shades often found in shaded areas. The broad, softly hairy leaves contribute a lush, tactile quality to the landscape, inviting touch and admiration.

Thriving in partial to full shade, this hydrangea variety flourishes where its vibrant foliage can be fully appreciated. It prefers moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil and benefits from protection against cold winds, making it a resilient choice for various climates. Once established, 'Goldrush' can withstand UK winters with ease, especially when mulched in colder regions. Light pruning after flowering can help maintain its shape, although leaving it unpruned allows for a more natural appearance. Additionally, this shrub is a magnet for pollinators like bees and butterflies, further enhancing its appeal in any garden setting.Height: 200 cm (79 in) Spread: 200 cm (79 in)

How to Grow
Hydrangea aspera prefers a sunny or semi shaded position, with shelter from cold, drying winds. Grow hydrangea plants in any rich fertile, moist soil. Improve the soil prior to planting by adding with plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Alternatively plant in patio containers in soil based compost.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Water regularly until plants are fully established. Leave the faded hydrangea flower heads in place until the new buds swell in spring to protect the delicate buds from frost damage. Prune after flowering, reducing the stems to restrict their growth to the available space and to improve the shape of the plant. After pruning hydrangeas, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant. Caution: Contact with hydrangea foliage may irritate the skin and eyes and all parts are harmful if eaten.
