Description

An evergreen to semi-evergreen climber, Hydrangea anomala ‘Semiola’ is ideal for partially shaded walls, fences or trellis in north and east-facing sites. Less vigorous than the common deciduous Climbing Hydrangea, it’s more suitable for smaller gardens, has the additional feature of copper-coloured foliage in the spring, and offers all-year-round, evergreen interest. From May to June, it bears masses of flat, white, lace-cap type flowers that light up shady areas. Self-clinging by aerial roots it doesn’t require any tying-in making it a great option for low-maintenance gardens. As well as its use as a climber, it can also be grown as spreading ground cover. Height and spread: 3m (10ft).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Climbing Hydrangeas thrive in a sunny, semi shaded or full shade position, with shelter from cold, drying winds. Grow hydrangea plants in any rich fertile, moist soil. Improve the soil prior to planting by adding plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Grow Hydrangea petiolaris against walls and fences where it will cling and support itself via aerial roots.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Water regularly until plants are fully established. The climbing hydrangea should be pruned immediately after flowering, reducing the stems to restrict their growth to the available space and to improve the shape of the plant. In the spring apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant. Caution: Contact with hydrangea foliage may irritate the skin and eyes and all parts are harmful if eaten.
