Description

Hydrangea anomala petiolaris 'Flying Saucer' commands attention with oversized lacecap blooms that seem to hover against a backdrop of rich green foliage from late spring into summer. This climbing Hydrangea produces larger flowerheads than other varieties, creating an especially dramatic display of creamy white florets that light up walls, fences and pergolas while also attracting pollinators. Clinging by aerial rootlets, it forms a dense, leafy curtain that brings texture, structure and seasonal interest to shaded spaces. The foliage turns butter yellow in autumn, adding additional interest. Ultimate height: 10m (32.8ft). Ultimate spread: 5m (16.4ft).

How to Grow
Climbing Hydrangeas thrive in a sunny, semi shaded or full shade position, with shelter from cold, drying winds. Grow hydrangea plants in any rich fertile, moist soil. Improve the soil prior to planting by adding plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Grow Hydrangea petiolaris against walls and fences where it will cling and support itself via aerial roots.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Water regularly until plants are fully established. The climbing hydrangea should be pruned immediately after flowering, reducing the stems to restrict their growth to the available space and to improve the shape of the plant. In the spring apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant. Caution: Contact with hydrangea foliage may irritate the skin and eyes and all parts are harmful if eaten.
