Ilex crenata 'Stokes' makes an excellent hedging plant - a great alternative to box for creating a formal boundary! This low-growing Holly bears its white flowers in May followed by glossy, black berries. Japanese Holly has shiny, dark green foliage with neatly scalloped edges that provide plenty of year round interest. This hardy shrub is particularly tolerant of cold sites and won't scorch easily like Box plants. Holly 'Stokes 'is a male cultivar which makes a useful choice for woodland areas, cottage garden borders, hedges and rockeries, providing good structure in the garden, even throughout the winter months. Height: 60cm (24"). Spread: 90cm (36").

How to Grow

Plant Holly trees in garden borders in any moist, well drained garden soil, in full sun or semi-shade.

Feed and water Holly trees regularly until they are fully established. Prune young Holly trees and formal hedges in summer, removing any damaged stems and trimming the remaining growth to shape. In later years free standing Holly trees require very little pruning at all.
