Description

Hippophae rhamnoides ‘Friesdorfer Orange’ is a superbly drought, wind and salt-tolerant hedging shrub for coastal gardens where it is invaluable as a shelter belt foundation plant. It will grow in almost any soil and is particularly tolerant of poor conditions. Dense and thorny, it is perfect for intruder and stock-proof hedging. A relatively compact variety, ‘Friesdorfer Orange’ forms a bushy shrub clothed in silvery-green, willow-like leaves followed by insignificant clusters of greenish, nectar-rich flowers which are attractive to pollinators. Unusually, ‘Friesdorfer Orange’ is self-fertile, producing thick bunches of bright orange berries in September without the need for a pollination partner. The sour berries are edible and packed with vitamin C. Height: 3m (9.8ft) Spread: 2.5m (8.2ft).
