Evergreen blue-grey leaves offer all year presence
Golden oat-like spikelets in summer
Adds movement and texture to planting schemes
Steel-blue foliage and golden flowers create colour and movement throughout the year. Helictotrichon sempervirens, commonly known as blue oat grass, forms neat evergreen clumps of narrow arching, blue-grey leaves that brighten borders with texture and colour. In summer, tall oat-like flower spikes rise above the foliage, catching the light and adding graceful height to planting schemes. Its architectural shape and cool colours makes it perfect for contemporary gardens, gravel planting and mixed borders where the foliage acts as a superb foil for brightly coloured flowers. The finely textured leaves sway gently in the breeze, bringing softness and rhythm to outdoor spaces. Reliable, versatile and stylish, this ornamental grass delivers lasting structure and visual interest across the seasons. Ultimate height: 1.2m (4ft). Ultimate spread: 75cm (30in).
Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

Grow Helictotrichon sempervirens in a sunny position with well-drained soil, as it performs best in dry, open conditions and dislikes winter wet. It is well suited to gravel gardens, coastal sites and low-maintenance borders where drainage is sharp. Once established, it is highly drought tolerant and requires little attention. Avoid rich or overly fertile soil, which can reduce its compact form and colour. In spring, comb through or cut back any tired or dead foliage to allow fresh growth to emerge cleanly from the base. Water only during prolonged dry spells in its first year; after that it should cope well with natural rainfall. Division is rarely needed but can be carried out in spring if clumps become congested.
