Grape 'Schiava Grossa' is a vigorous variety with a remarkable history and flavour to match. Long celebrated as one of the finest dessert grapes, it produces heavy yields of large, juicy bunches with a deep purple-black colour and exceptional sweetness. In mild, southern regions, Grape ‘Schiava Grossa’ thrives when trained against a sunny south or south-west facing wall, while in cooler northern areas it sets fruit reliably under the protection of an unheated greenhouse.
First planted at Hampton Court in 1768, where the original vine still flourishes today as the world’s largest grape vine, this illustrious variety is a true testament to both resilience and quality. Whether for reliable greenhouse cultivation or outdoor growing in southern regions of the UK, Grape 'Schiava Grossa' is a superb choice for anyone seeking abundant harvests of delicious grapes from late summer into early autumn.
As well as crops of tasty grapes, grapevines also make attractive garden features. These vigorous vines will quickly cover a trellis or pergola, their large lobed leaves providing shade and privacy as well as lovely autumn colour.

Water grapes vines only during dry periods as excessive watering can reduce the quality of the fruit. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the vines in spring to retain moisture at their roots throughout summer. Prune grape vines in winter and train them in summer. Do not allow them to carry a crop of grapes until their third summer.
