Description

Fritillarias are one of the showiest of spring bulbs - with their tall, dark stems crowned with a ring of nodding, bell-shaped blooms they add height and drama early in the season. Fritillaria ‘Early Mix’ offers especially early flowering plus an exquisite colour palette that steers away from the normally brash oranges and reds of Crown Imperials, offering sophisticated shades of peach, apricot and yellow patterned with delicate veining. The flowers are followed by attractive seed heads. Ultimate height: 60 to 70cm (24 to 27in). Ultimate spread: 30cm (12in).

Fritillaria ‘Early Mix’ contains the following varieties:

  • Fritillaria imperialis ‘Early Dream’ – Orange and yellow flowers with darker veining.
  • Fritillaria ‘Early Fantasy’ – Apricot flushed with pink.
  • Fritillaria ‘Early Passion’ – Soft yellow blushed with bronzy shades at the base.

How to Grow
Fritillaria thrives in reliably moist, well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. Add plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost to the soil prior to planting to improve less than ideal soils. Heavy clay soils are not suitable, and in these conditions grow the bulbs in raised beds or containers. Plant Imperial Fritillary bulbs at a depth and spacing of 20-30cm in a warm, sunny position. Fritillary bulbs are fragile so always handle them with care. Apply a high potash tomato feed at fortnightly intervals after bulbs start to emerge.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
When growing fritillaries, it is essential to allow their foliage to die back naturally as this will feed the bulb for the following year. In good conditions, the bulbs will grow to form large clumps that can be lifted and divided in autumn if needed.
