Description

Daphne mezereum 'Rubra' is a stunning deciduous shrub celebrated for its strikingly fragrant, deep pink flowers that emerge on bare stems during the late winter to early spring months. This early bloom not only adds a splash of vibrant color to the garden but also fills the air with a delightful scent, making it a cherished addition to any landscape. The clusters of rich purplish-pink to crimson-red flowers typically appear between February and April, often before the leaves unfurl, creating a captivating display that signals the arrival of spring.

The blooms of this shrub are not just visually appealing; they are also highly aromatic, drawing in early pollinators such as bees at a time when few other nectar sources are available. Following the flowering period, Daphne mezereum 'Rubra' produces bright red berries in the summer, which, while adding to the plant's ornamental charm, are toxic if ingested. The lance-shaped, soft green leaves emerge after the flowering phase and may turn a lovely yellow in autumn, providing additional seasonal interest. The plant's growth habit is upright and bushy, characterized by a naturally rounded form and stiff, bare-looking stems during the winter months.

For optimal growth, this shrub thrives in fertile, well-drained, humus-rich soils that retain some moisture, while it is essential to avoid waterlogged or excessively dry conditions. It flourishes best in partial shade or light woodland settings, although it can tolerate full sun in cooler climates. Daphne mezereum 'Rubra' is an excellent choice for woodland gardens, shaded borders, or areas near paths and doorways where its enchanting fragrance can be fully appreciated. However, caution is advised, as all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested and can cause skin irritation, making it important to plant it thoughtfully, especially around children and pets. Once established, this shrub does not respond well to transplanting, as it is sensitive to root disturbance, and it is hardy throughout most of the UK. Height: 120 cm (4 ft) Spread: 90 cm (3 ft).

How to Grow
Pot up Daphne plants and grow them on in frost free conditions. When plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for a period of 7 to 10 days prior to planting in their final positions. Transplant Daphne plants into borders and containers outdoors in moist, fertile, well drained soil that is rich in organic matter. Choose a position in sun or semi shade. When growing in containers use a soil based compost. Daphne resents root disturbance so try to avoid this when transplanting as this may delay plant establishment.

More Info
Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season while young plants become established. Once established, Daphne plants require only occasional attention. Pruning Daphne is best kept to a minimum, removing only occasional damaged stems and lightly trimming those that spoil the shape of the plant in summer after flowering. Caution: All parts of Daphne are toxic if eaten and contact with the sap may irritate the skin and eyes.
