Description
From reds through apricots and oranges, Dahlia 'Sunny Reggae' boasts a colour combination like no other! Exquisite semi-double flowers each have their own unique character, some with collars of small cream petals at their centre, others with blushed petals in contrasting colours. Free-flowering from July to October, these warm Dahlia flowers are highly attractive to bees and other pollinating insects. Bushy and compact, grow dwarf Dahlias in beds, borders or containers for a long and colourful summer display. Height: 50cm (20"). Spread: 40cm (16").

Culinary note: All dahlia flowers and tubers are edible. The flavours and textures can vary greatly depending on the soil and conditions in which they were grown. Flavours range from water chestnut through to a spicy apple or even carrot. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Sowing

Sow Dahlia seeds indoors from February to April on the surface of a good, free draining compost and lightly cover with a fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place the seed tray in a propagator at a temperature of 20-25C (68-77F) or seal inside a clear polythene bag until germination which takes 7 - 21 days. Keep the compost damp but not wet and do not exclude light as this helps germination.

When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 7.5cm (3") pots and grow Dahlia plants on in cooler conditions. When all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions over 7 – 10 days before planting outdoors. Plant Dahlias at a distance of 30cm (12") apart on any fertile, well drained soil in full sun.

More Info
Feed and water dahlias regularly throughout the growing season. While plants are still young, pinch out the growing tip of each stem to encourage bushier growth and masses of flowers. Deadhead faded dahlia flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced.
