Description

Fresh currants can cost a small fortune in the supermarkets, so why not grow your own and enjoy them straight from the bush. This delicious duo combines 2 varieties which are renowned for their particularly large fruits. Both produce excellent yields with a delicious flavour. Currants freeze particularly well so there is no risk of an unmanageable glut of fruit!

  • Collection comprises:
  • Blackcurrant ‘Big Ben’ - Fruits are sweet enough to be eaten fresh or used in cakes, jams and crumbles.
  • Redcurrant ‘Rovada’ - Bears its generous crop in long strings making them particularly easy to harvest.

How to Grow
Currants prefer a position in full sun but will tolerate semi shade. Shelter from cold winds and late spring frosts as these conditions may damage the flowers, and reduce the yield of fruit later in the year. Grow Currants in rich, moist, well drained soil. Incorporate plenty of well rotted manure into the ground prior to planting. Plant Currant bushes between late autumn and spring, at a distance of 1.5m (5’) apart and a depth of 5cm (2”) lower than the soil mark on the stem. Planting Currants slightly deep will encourage the production of extra stems from below ground level.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Keep Currant plants well watered during dry periods, particularly as the fruits are developing. Netting the bushes will help to protect the currants from birds. Currants can be harvested from July. Refer to individual product pages for pruning instructions.
