Description

Saffron is one of the most expensive spices you can buy – worth more per gram than gold itself! The orange-red stigma of Crocus sativus are used to flavour many dishes, particularly rice-based recipes, bringing its distinctive yellow colour to brighten your plate. The stigma are picked from the blooms and dried for use later on.

If you’re not a budding chef, there is still plenty to love about this showy autumn-flowering Crocus. Its rich purple blooms brighten the garden just as autumn chills begin to set in. Plant it through borders and rockeries or fill patio pots for a dazzling display. The Saffron Crocus enjoys deep planting in gritty soil and plenty of sun. Height: 15cm (6"). Spread: 5cm (2").

Culinary Herb note: Some parts of these plants are edible and can be used as herbs to add flavour and colour to your meals. For more details about edible flowers click here.

How to Grow
Grow crocus in any well drained garden soil in sun or semi shade. Crocus bulbs should be planted in autumn, in large clumps at a depth of 10cm (4") and at a distance of 7cm (3") apart. Alternatively grow them in containers or naturalised in grass.
More Info
Allow the strap like foliage to die back naturally after flowering. Avoid mowing areas of grass where crocus are naturalised until they have completely died back.
