Description

Brilliant colour in both spring and autumn creates a striking ornamental tree with standout appeal across multiple seasons.

Cornus florida 'Cherokee Chief' instantly draws the eye with its large, deep, rose-red bracts in spring, creating a vivid floral display before the young leaves unfurl in bronze and copper tones. Its layered, spreading habit and elegant silhouette make it an ideal focal point for lawns, patios or mixed borders, while glossy green summer foliage changes to rich purple-red in autumn for year-round appeal. This classic flowering dogwood also produces attractive red fruit that entice birds and adds interest into winter, making it a versatile landscape feature for both formal and informal gardens.

Ultimate height and spread: 4m to 6m (13ft to 19.6ft).

How to Grow
Grow Cornus trees in rich fertile, well drained, neutral to acid soil. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil to improve drainage and soil fertility. Plant dogwood trees in a sunny or semi-shaded position.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Feed and water flowering dogwoods regularly until fully established. Once established, Cornus trees require only occasional attention. Pruning dogwood is best kept to a minimum, removing only occasional damaged stems and lightly trimming those that spoil the shape of the plant in late winter or early spring. As the tree matures the lower branches can be removed to create a clear trunk. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or other organic matter around the base of the plant in spring. Caution: Fruits are harmful if eaten, leaf hairs may irritate skin and eyes.
