Video
A classic Rock Rose with elegant papery white blooms, flecked with splashes of deep burgundy. Cistus purpureus 'Alan Fradd' is the perfect seaside plant, tolerating salty air and sandy, dry soils where many plants would fail to thrive. From early summer this compact shrub is covered in cup shaped blooms, each lasting just a day before a new bloom takes its place. The narrow, green foliage forms a neatly rounded evergreen shrub that looks perfect in gravel gardens and sunny borders. Although hardy to around -5°C, rock roses will appreciate a sheltered site with some winter protection. Height and spread: 100cm (39").

Transplant Cistus plants into borders and containers outdoors in any well drained soil in full sun with shelter from cold winds. They will happily grow in poor soils. When growing Cistus in containers use a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
More Info Feed and water Cistus plants regularly throughout the growing season while young plants become established. Pinch back young plants after flowering to encourage a bushy habit. Once established, rock rose plants require only occasional attention. Pruning Cistus is best undertaken in mid-spring when temperatures have started to rise. Start by removing any damaged, diseased or misplaced shoots and if needed, lightly trim shoots to maintain a good shape. Avoid hard pruning as Cistus plants will not regenerate from old wood.
