Description

With continuous flowering throughout the summer and incredible drought tolerance once established, Cistus criticus is an invaluable choice for the hottest, driest borders in your garden.

Bushy mounds of silvery-grey, slightly hairy foliage are covered in rose pink to purple-pink flowers with gold centres for months. The saucer shaped flowers, around 6cm in diameter, are composed of five crimpled petals that resemble crepe paper, and although each flower only lasts a day, they are continually produced providing colour throughout summer.

This classic Mediterranean shrub combines evergreen foliage interest with a long flowering season, performing admirably in sunbaked borders, rockeries and gravel gardens and thriving in the poorest, thinnest soils. Ultimate height and spread: 1m (3.2ft).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Plant Cistus into borders and containers outdoors in any well drained soil in full sun with shelter from cold winds. They will happily grow in poor soils. When growing Cistus in containers use a soil based compost.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Feed and water Cistus plants regularly throughout the growing season while young plants become established. Pinch back young plants after flowering to encourage a bushy habit. Once established, rock rose plants require only occasional attention. Pruning Cistus is best undertaken in mid-spring when temperatures have started to rise. Start by removing any damaged, diseased or misplaced shoots and if needed, lightly trim shoots to maintain a good shape. Avoid hard pruning as Cistus plants will not regenerate from old wood.
