Description

Blackberry ‘Chester’ is a standout late-season variety that offers a generous harvest stretching from August right through to the first frosts. Perfect for those who enjoy fresh fruit well into autumn, it offers a bounty of firm, sweet berries that are noticeably sweeter than many other blackberries.

One of its best features is the thornless, spineless canes, making harvesting a breeze—no more scratched hands or tricky picking. The plant itself is vigorous, producing plenty of semi-erect canes that take up less space in your garden, ideal for smaller plots or large containers.

‘Chester’ is also a reliable performer, yielding a very heavy crop late in the season. It’s hardy enough to withstand cold winters and shows strong resistance to common diseases such as cane blight and mildew, ensuring healthy growth year after year. This blackberry is an almost bomb-proof choice for gardeners seeking an easy-care, productive plant with an extended season of delicious fruit. Ultimate height: 2m (6.5ft). Ultimate spread: 2.5m (8.2ft)

How to Grow
Plant blackberry bushes in a sunny position in any well drained soil. Incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the ground prior to planting. When growing blackberry plants, support the stems on a framework of wires stretched between sturdy 1.8m (6') posts, or trained against a trellis or wall.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Water well for the first year until blackberry plants are fully established. Train the stems onto their supports as they grow. Cover the plants with netting to protect the crop from birds as blackberry fruits begin to develop. Blackberries can be harvested from July onwards. In autumn, prune the canes which have fruited over summer to ground level. Canes which have not fruited should be 'tied in' to their supports. In spring, while the ground is moist, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the canes to improve moisture retention throughout the summer.
