Description

Betula utilis subsp. jacquemontii 'Doorenbos' is a captivating deciduous tree, celebrated for its striking smooth, creamy-white bark that gracefully peels away in delicate layers. This tree boasts an elegant, upright stature, making it a prized addition to gardens where it introduces architectural form and a vibrant contrast throughout the seasons.

Reaching a height of 10 meters (33 feet) and a spread of 6 meters (20 feet), this tree exhibits a graceful, pyramidal growth habit. Its dark green, ovate leaves transform into a brilliant yellow in autumn, enhancing the seasonal palette. The winter months reveal the tree's unique bark, which serves as a stunning focal point in the landscape, ensuring year-round visual interest.

Ideal for full sun to partial shade, the 'Doorenbos' thrives in moist, well-drained, fertile soil, while exhibiting resilience across various soil types, though it prefers to avoid waterlogged conditions. With low maintenance requirements, it is best pruned only to remove any dead or damaged branches. This tree not only serves as an exquisite specimen for parks and large gardens but also provides essential habitat and nourishment for a variety of wildlife, enriching the ecosystem it inhabits.

How to Grow
Grow Birch on any moist, fertile, well drained soil. Birch thrive in full sun or lightly dappled shade and are generally tolerant of windy positions.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Feed and water Betula until fully established. Once established, Birch trees require no maintenance. If pruning is necessary to remove diseased or misplaced stems then this should be carried out in winter when the plant is dormant, as Birch has a tendency to bleed sap if pruned during the growing season.
