What is Half-Hardy Tuber?
Plant that grows from an underground storage organ. Generally supplied in a dormant condition with no top growth. Can be grown outdoors but requires winter protection from frosts and temperatures below 0C.
Exquisite deep rose blooms, edged with a delicate white margin are borne in profusion throughout the summer, lasting well into autumn. This sensational tuberous Begonia makes a breath-taking focal point in patio pots. The serrated, bright green foliage forms an attractive rounded plant that remains neat and compact throughout the growing season. Weatherproof and reliable, Begonia x tuberhybrida 'Camelia' is easy to grow whether you plant it in sun or shade. Height and spread: 30cm (12").
Tubers are ideal for containers, making a larger plant in the first year than plug plants or growing from seed. From February, start begonia tubers off in well-drained, moist compost in a warm, frost-free position in bright light. When planting begonia tubers, position them just below the compost surface with the indented side facing upwards. When begonia plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days, before planting them in their final positions. Choose a sunny or semi shaded position that is protected from strong winds.
Feed and water plants frequently throughout the growing season taking care not to over-water, as this will cause new flower buds to drop. Deadhead faded blooms regularly to encourage more vibrant begonia flowers to be produced and to extend the flowering period. At the end of the growing season the leaves and stems will yellow and fall off naturally. Reduce watering to prevent begonia plants from rotting at this stage. When the stems have all dropped away, dig out the tubers. Clean and dry them before storing them away in peat or sand at 7-15°C (45-60°F) until they can be replanted next February.
