Description

Azalea japonica is arguably the very best spring shrub for smaller gardens – offering a brilliant splash of colour that will waken up even dingy corners combined with the benefit of evergreen foliage that provides year-round allure.

Azalea japonica ‘White’ offers a refreshing sparkle of brilliant white flowers from April to May, the whole bush being covered in a prolific flush of trumpet-shaped blooms that almost obscures the tight and bushy mound of small, dark green leaves. The foliage is retained all year, delivering structure and a perfect dark green backdrop to complement the colours of later perennial flowers and seasonal bedding.

This compact, low maintenance shrub is perfect for small space gardening, injecting energising colour into urban spaces such as balconies, terraces and courtyards where plants need to be grown in containers. It is equally suitable for planting into a narrow shady border or as a specimen shrub at the edge of a much larger mixed border. Grow Azalea japonica ‘White’ in acid soil or pots of ericaceous compost where this hardy shrub will reliably reward year after year for very little maintenance. Height and Spread: 50-100cm (20-39in).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Grow Azaleas in moist, well drained, acid soil that has been enriched with plenty of well rotted organic matter. Choose a position in semi or dappled shade with shelter from cold drying winds. Many azaleas can cope with a sunny position provided that the soil remains reliably moist. Where soil conditions are alkaline, Azalea plants are best grown in patio containers, using a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil based compost. Azaleas are surface rooting so it is important to avoid planting them too deeply.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Water Azalea plants regularly throughout the growing season. Where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. Feed Azaleas in spring with a slow release fertiliser for acid-loving plants. Protect plants from cold winter winds. Border grown Azaleas will appreciate an autumn mulch to protect their shallow roots from winter cold. Take care not to mound the mulch too close to the stem as this may cause it to rot.
