Description
Showy and ostentatious, the upright stems of Asclepias tuberosa are topped with clusters of golden-orange blooms that sport backward sweeping sepals. The butterfly weed is aptly named, attracting crowds of butterflies and bees to its nectar rich blooms throughout summer. As autumn approaches the flowers are followed by long seed heads that split open to reveal seeds adorned with strands of silken white hairs. A fabulous hardy perennial for wildlife gardens with a long season of interest. The bright blooms also make an unusual and striking cut flower. Height: 90cm (36"). Spread: 60cm (24").

How to Grow
Plant bareroots at the earliest opportunity following delivery. Grow butterfly weed plants in any fertile, well drained soil in full sun. Once established, Asclepias plants are reasonably drought tolerant and will survive well during dry conditions.
More Info
Water young plants regularly until they are fully established. Deadhead the first flush of blooms when they fade to promote a second flush of vibrant butterfly weed flowers. Leave the faded flower heads of any subsequent blooms intact at the end of summer to enjoy an attractive autumn seed head display. When the first frosts blacken the stems, cut them down to ground level. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of Asclepias in spring.
