Description

Aquilegia vulgaris var. stellata ‘White Barlow’ is a truly exquisite perennial that captivates with its strikingly unique double flowers, which are devoid of spurs and radiate a pristine white hue. These blooms, resembling delicate pom-poms, offer a refreshing departure from the more conventional forms of aquilegias, making them a standout choice for discerning gardeners. Flowering from late spring through early summer, this elegant plant infuses borders with a sense of brightness and sophistication, particularly enhancing the charm of cottage and woodland gardens. The plant's soft, fern-like foliage not only provides a lush backdrop during the blooming period but also maintains its visual appeal long after the flowers have faded.

This deciduous perennial exhibits an upright, clump-forming growth habit, which allows it to create a striking presence in any garden setting. The fully double, spurless flowers are a hallmark of the ‘White Barlow’ variety, offering a distinctive look that is both refined and enchanting. As the blooms emerge, they attract a variety of pollinators, including bees, thereby contributing to the ecological health of the garden. The deeply divided, fern-like green foliage adds an additional layer of texture, enhancing the overall aesthetic and providing a lush, verdant contrast to the brilliant white flowers.

Thriving in conditions that range from full sun to partial shade, Aquilegia vulgaris var. stellata ‘White Barlow’ flourishes best in moist yet well-drained soil, making it a versatile choice for various garden designs. While it has the potential to self-seed, resulting in seedlings that may exhibit a range of flower forms, this hardy perennial is well-suited to the temperate climate of the UK. Its ability to adapt and flourish in diverse settings makes it an ideal candidate for cottage gardens, borders, and naturalistic plantings, where it can be appreciated for its beauty and ecological contributions alike. Height: 85cm (34 in) Spread: 45cm (18 in).
