Description

Aquilegia vulgaris var. stellata ‘Ruby Port’ is a captivating perennial that commands attention with its sumptuous, deep burgundy double flowers. These blooms, characterized by their star-like shape and absence of spurs, create a layered, pompom-like appearance that adds a unique and dramatic flair to garden borders during the late spring and early summer months. The striking color of the flowers, reminiscent of fine wine, contrasts beautifully with the plant's delicate, fern-like foliage, which serves as a soft and elegant backdrop. This combination makes ‘Ruby Port’ an exceptional choice for cottage gardens, mixed borders, and naturalistic planting schemes, where it can truly shine.

This deciduous perennial exhibits an upright, bushy growth habit, making it a robust addition to any garden setting. The double, spurless flowers bloom in a rich ruby-red to burgundy hue, creating a stunning visual impact that draws the eye and invites admiration. Flowering occurs from late spring to early summer, providing a vibrant display that enhances the seasonal transition in the garden. The finely divided, fern-like leaves not only contribute a soft texture but also complement the boldness of the blooms, ensuring that ‘Ruby Port’ remains a focal point throughout its flowering period.

Particularly well-suited for cottage gardens and woodland-style plantings, Aquilegia vulgaris var. stellata ‘Ruby Port’ is not only aesthetically pleasing but also beneficial for the ecosystem, as it attracts bees and other pollinators. This perennial thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist yet well-drained soil, demonstrating its adaptability to a variety of growing conditions. While it may self-seed, resulting in seedlings that can vary in flower color, the original plant remains a hardy perennial, well-equipped to flourish under UK growing conditions. Its resilience and beauty make it a cherished addition to any garden, promising to enchant for years to come.Height: 75cm (30 in) Spread: 45cm (18 in).
