Description

Soft lilac-pink, cup-shaped blooms float daintily above grassy foliage. Allium roseum is a low-growing allium that brings a different look to the tightly spherical flower heads and stiffly erect stems of other allium varieties. The flowers appear in airy, loose umbels on wiry stems, lending a more relaxed, cottage garden feel. Flowering from May to June, it’s perfect for adding colour just when the earliest spring bulbs have faded but summer perennials are yet to get into full swing. Its slender, grass-like foliage stays unobtrusive, enhancing its natural look.

Ideal for rockeries, border edges or patio pots, Allium roseum is best planted in groups and is excellent for naturalising – the bulbs happily multiply. Drought tolerant and undemanding, it also makes a lovely, long-lasting cut flower. Brimming with nectar  – bees and butterflies just can’t resist it! Ultimate height: 30cm (12in). Ultimate spread: 10cm (4in).

How to Grow
Alliums thrive in light sandy, well drained soil in full sun. Avoid planting in cold wet soils as the bulbs are prone to rot in these conditions. Plant allium bulbs at a depth of 10cm (4") and a distance of 10cm (4") apart. A slow release fertilizer can be added to poor soils at the time of planting to improve fertility. When growing alliums, plant them where the leaves of other plants will cover the base of their stems. This will hide the old foliage which dies back before flowering begins.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Alliums require little maintenance. Leave stems of faded allium flowers intact to enjoy their spectacular seedheads in autumn. Divide overcrowded clumps of alliums after flowering. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes.
