With a compact habit and dense canopy, this attractive Japanese Maple is perfect for growing in patio containers. The palmate leaves emerge deep-red and gradually colour to green throughout the summer, before autumn turns them to brilliant shades of orange and gold. Acer palmatum 'Little Princess' is a slow growing variety that provides plenty of seasonal interest throughout the year, creating a lovely focal point for even the smallest of gardens. Height and spread: 1.5m (59").

How to Grow

Pot up acer plants and grow them on in cool conditions until large enough to plant outside in their final positions. Grow Acer palmatum trees in any moist, fertile, well drained soil in sun or dappled shade. It is quite important to give plants shelter from strong winds which can scorch the leaves. Alternatively grow the Japanese Maple in large containers, using a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3.

Water regularly throughout the growing season until acer trees are well established. Protect plants from strong winds. Acers require little pruning other than to maintain their shape. Lightly trim stems if necessary from late autumn to midwinter.
