Description

Of all the conifers, the Korean Fir tree is perhaps the most enchanting. Extraordinary violet-blue cones nestle upright among the dark green foliage from an early age, at a size of just 60cm (2ft). Developing during the summer months, the cones remain a constant fascination right through to late winter. The needles of Abies koreana are wider, more rounded and softer than our native spruces, giving a full conical appearance as the branches twirl around its central stem. This captivating evergreen makes a stunning specimen tree for providing plenty of year round interest. Although this RHS AGM variety can achieve a significant size with maturity, its slow growth habit ensures that it will remain a manageable size for many years. Supplied as a single stem bareroot. Ultimate height: Up to 10m (32'). Spread: 6m (19').

How to Grow
Grow Abies koreana in moist, fertile, neutral to slightly acid, well drained soil. Choose a position in full sun. A sheltered site with even light is preferable to ensure even growth and retain its elegant shape. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil to improve its structure and fertility.

These plants are lifted from the nursery field when dormant, and sent to you in late autumn or spring for planting. They often look dead on arrival, but they are just resting in the dormant period and will establish quickly for a strong start in the garden come spring. Set out in prepared soil in holes wide enough and deep enough to lay out the roots. Tread down the planting soil to knock out air pockets. Water well to settle. Apply a mulch to protect roots from cold temperatures. If conditions prevent immediate planting, set roughly into loose soil or a pot of compost (‘heeling in’) to protect the roots. Set these at the same level as they were in the nursery field – you should see a soil line at the base of the stem. Stake trees, taller shrubs and roses to prevent root disturbance.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
In the first few years after planting, water Korean Fir trees regularly, particularly during dry periods until they are fully established. Abies koreana will naturally form an elegant conical shaped tree. No pruning is required.
