Flowering Months

Starry white blooms emerge on naked stems from as early as February, filling the cold winter air with a beautiful fragrance. Closely related to Forsythia, Abeliophyllum distichum is a deciduous shrub with lax, open growth that makes a handsome wall shrub or free standing specimen. Throughout summer this White Forsythia gives centre stage to showier shrubs before reclaiming the limelight in autumn when its foliage turns rich purple. Unusual and rarely seen, Abeliophyllum is best planted close to a door or pathway where its fragrance can be best appreciated. Height and spread: 150cm (59").

How to Grow

Grow Abeliophyllum in fertile, well drained soil. Choose a position in full sun. White Forsythia may be grown as a free standing specimen or trained as a wall shrub.

Feed and water Abeliophyllum plants regularly until fully established. After flowering, prune all stems back to strong buds close to the base of the plant. Wall trained plants should be cut back to a permanent framework of stems.
