Trees by Soil Type

Match your tree to your soil and it will establish more quickly, need less intervention and perform better over its lifetime. Categories here cover trees for clay soil, well-drained soil, sandy soil, rich fertile soil, wet soil and exposed or windy sites. Trees tolerant of a broad range of conditions are listed separately for gardeners who want flexibility. Soil type is often the single most important factor in long-term tree health; selecting a species suited to your conditions removes one of the main causes of poor establishment and premature decline. Browse all trees to filter by additional characteristics once you have identified your soil category.

How to choose trees by soil type

Matching a tree to existing conditions almost always produces better results than amending the soil to suit the tree, particularly on heavier clay or freely draining sandy ground where sustained improvement is difficult. A simple soil test identifies pH and drainage characteristics in around 10 minutes and is worth doing before buying. Our trees masterclass covers soil preparation and long-term tree care in more depth. The FAQs below address which trees tolerate clay, how to handle wet ground and what to plant on exposed sites.

Which trees grow best in clay soil?

The best trees for clay soil tolerate slow drainage and periodic compaction without succumbing to root rot. Sorbus aucuparia (rowan) performs reliably on clay and produces blossom, autumn berries and good foliage colour. Malus (crab apple) and many Prunus cultivars also cope well on clay, provided it is not waterlogged for extended periods.

What trees grow in wet or boggy conditions?

The best trees for wet or waterlogged soil are species adapted to poor drainage. Alnus glutinosa (common alder) is the most reliably tolerant, thriving at water margins and in persistently wet ground. Sorbus aucuparia and some birch varieties tolerate moist conditions without requiring fully waterlogged ground.

Which trees tolerate sandy or free-draining soil?

The best trees for sandy, free-draining soil are species adapted to low moisture retention. Betula (birch) is among the most tolerant, establishing well in sandy conditions. Incorporating organic matter at planting helps newly planted trees through their first dry summer on lighter soils.

Do I need to test my soil before choosing a tree?

Testing your soil before choosing a tree is useful but not always essential. A simple visual and tactile assessment tells you whether you have clay, sandy or loam soil. A pH test is worth doing if you are considering acid-loving species such as some Acer varieties or Magnolia, which perform poorly on alkaline soils.
