Direct sow Wallflower seeds outdoors from May to June. Choose a position in full sun on well drained soil which has been raked to a fine tilth. Sow Erysimum seeds thinly, at a depth of 1.5mm (1/16") deep in drills set 30cm (12") apart. After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination which usually takes 7 to 14 days. Water the ground regularly, especially during dry periods When large enough to handle, transplant the wallflower seedlings into their final positions at a distance of 30cm (12") apart. Erysimum plants are tolerant of most neutral or alkaline soils and will even cope well on very poor soils.
Alternatively, sow wallflowers in pots or trays of moist seed compost and cover with a very light sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Seal container inside a polythene bag at a temperature of 10-15C (50-59F). When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant and grow them on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant outdoors in September or October.
When wallflower plants are 13cm (5") tall, pinch out the growing point to make them more bushy.
Feed and water Erysimum plants until they are fully established. Trim back Wallflower ‘Sugar Rush’ in late autumn or early winter after flowering has finished, to prevent them from becoming leggy and encourage a second flush of flowers in spring.
