With excellent winter hardiness, this speedy brassica offers crops almost all year round. Sow Turnip ‘Armand’ from late spring for lifting in summer or autumn, or sow later for pulling through the colder months when little else is available. The roots stand well in the ground without deteriorating. Turnip ‘Armand’ can be grown for its sweet, purple and white roots or its tops of highly nutritious greens during the early spring ‘Hungry Gap’. Height: 20cm (8in). Spread: 25cm (10in).

Thin as necessary for small, succulently sweet roots.
Turnips grow best on rich well manured soil but will grow on ordinary fertile soil to which has been added plenty of well rotted compost. Sow seeds in succession from spring to mid summer, 1cm (0.5in) deep in drills 30cm (12in) apart.Thin out the seedlings to 10-15cm(4-6in) apart. For leafy greens early/mid spring, sow late summer/early autumn. Cut tops when only 10-15cm high, cut frequently and leave to resprout. Several cuts can be obtained.
For best results turnips should be grown quickly, help to achieve this by watering well at all stages. Harvest when still medium size for the best flavour. Prefers a well drained, moist, fertile soil. Harvest May to September. The season can be extended by sowing under cloches in early spring and again in late summer.
