Tulip acuminata is a rarely seen heirloom variety, first recorded in the early 1800s and likely much older, with origins linked to wild Turkish species. Its narrow, flame-like petals taper into long points, resembling flickering sparks of scarlet and gold that leap upwards above grey-green, wavy-edged leaves.
This unique tulip is best planted in dense groups so that its wispy form isn’t lost amongst the wider landscape. It works particularly well planted into a large container where its unique appearance makes a striking display that is quite unlike any other tulip. Massed in borders its curious spidery shape makes a great contrast against the simple profile of classic single varieties. It also thrives in naturalistic settings, making a unique addition to wildflower meadows and spreading freely to form stunning colonies over time. Ultimate height: 40-50cm (16-20in). Ultimate spread: 15cm (6in).
