Description

Alliums are highly valued by gardeners for their sturdy, upright growth, which adds both structure and vibrant color to early summer flower beds. This exceptional collection features five unique species that thrive in gravel gardens and rockeries. When planted in clusters, they create a stunning visual effect that connects the blooming of spring bulbs with the arrival of summer perennials. Like all Alliums, these plants are easy to cultivate and require minimal maintenance once they are established.

Allium Collection comprises:

  • Allium sphaerocephalon - (20 Bulbs) An understated allium with unusual oval shaped, purple green flower heads, that associates beautifully with swaying grasses. Height: 60cm (24"). Spread: 8cm (3").
  • Allium moly - (20 Bulbs) Dense clusters of star-shaped, golden yellow flowers from late spring. Height: 15cm (6"). Spread: 5cm (2").
  • Allium roseum - (20 Bulbs) Also known as rosy garlic, produces narrow, grass like leaves, from which stems of loose , pale pink, cup shaped allium flowers appear. Height 60cm (24"). Spread: 10cm (4").
  • Allium cowanii - (20 bulbs) Clusters of pure white, starry, long-lasting flowers that are perfect for cutting. Blooming in May and June, ornamental onion looks lovely planted in drifts at the front of a border or makes a great addition to mixed containers. Bees, butterflies and other pollinators are attracted to the nectar-rich, sweetly scented flowers. Height: 40cm (16"). Spread: 10cm (4").
  • Allium neapolitanum - (20 Bulbs) Clusters of pure white, starry, long-lasting flowers that are perfect for cutting.

How to Grow
Alliums thrive in light sandy, well drained soil in full sun. Avoid planting in cold wet soils as the bulbs are prone to rot in these conditions. Plant allium bulbs at a depth of 10cm (4") and a distance of 10cm (4") apart. A slow release fertilizer can be added to poor soils at the time of planting to improve fertility. When growing alliums, plant them where the leaves of other plants will cover the base of their stems. This will hide the old foliage which dies back before flowering begins.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Alliums require little maintenance. Leave stems of faded allium flowers intact to enjoy their spectacular seedheads in autumn. Divide overcrowded clumps of alliums after flowering. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes.
