Description

Salvia greggii 'Red Swing' is a stunning evergreen perennial that captivates with its compact form and strikingly vibrant red tubular flowers. This remarkable plant not only adds a splash of bold color to sunny borders and containers but also serves as a magnet for pollinators throughout an extended blooming season. Its bushy and upright growth habit makes it an excellent choice for creating architectural interest in any garden setting, ensuring that it stands out as a focal point amidst other flora.

The foliage of 'Red Swing' consists of small, aromatic dark green leaves that provide a lush backdrop to its brilliant blossoms. Blooming from late spring through autumn, the bright red flowers are not only visually appealing but also play a crucial role in attracting a variety of wildlife, including bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies. This perennial thrives in full sun, where it can showcase its flowers to their fullest potential, and it is well-suited to well-drained soils, demonstrating resilience even in poorer, drier conditions once established.

With a maximum height and spread of approximately 50 cm (20 inches), Salvia greggii 'Red Swing' is a manageable addition to any garden. It is hardy to around -5°C, although it may require some winter protection in the colder regions of the UK. For optimal health and aesthetics, light pruning after flowering is recommended to maintain its shape and promote fresh growth. This exquisite plant is perfect for those looking to enhance their outdoor spaces with vibrant color while supporting local pollinator populations, making it a truly valuable addition to any garden.

How to Grow
Grow in full sun in moist but freely draining soil. Drought tolerant once established.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Water regularly until salvia plants are fully established. Deadhead faded flowers throughout the summer to encourage more blooms to be produced and feed container specimens every 3-4 weeks to promote continuous flowering. In autumn, lightly trim, leaving some top growth for protection over winter. Saliva greggii cultivars are hardy down to -10 to -15C provided they are given adequate drainage. In spring, once growth recommences, prune back to a low framework.
