Description
Deep purple blooms decorate Rhododendron 'Marcel Menard' in late Spring. Each flower of this RHS AGM variety is speckled at the throat with coppery-brown flecks. The leathery green foliage is evergreen, providing year-round colour and structure in the garden. This old variety is particularly tough and needs little maintenance once established. A large shrub that will brighten up a shaded corner – perfect for acid borders and woodland gardens. Height and spread: 180cm (70").

How to Grow
Grow Rhododendrons in moist, well drained, acid soil that has been enriched with plenty of well rotted organic matter. Choose a position in semi or dappled shade with shelter from cold drying winds. Many dwarf Rhododendrons can cope with a sunny position provided that the soil remains reliably moist. Where soil conditions are alkaline, Rhododendron plants are best grown in patio containers, using a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Rhododendrons are surface rooting so it is important to avoid planting them too deeply.
More Info
Water Rhododendron plants regularly throughout the growing season. Where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. Feed Rhododendrons in spring with a slow release fertiliser for acid-loving plants. Protect plants from cold winter winds. Border grown Rhododendrons will appreciate an autumn mulch to protect their shallow roots from winter cold. Take care not to mound the mulch too close to the stem as this may cause it to rot. If necessary, lightly prune Rhododendron plants in June to remove damaged shoots and restrict size.
