Description

Renowned as one of the finest blossom trees, Prunus serrulata 'Shimidsu' is a small ornamental cherry tree prized for its extravagant spring display and striking seasonal interest.

Tremendous clusters of large semi-double flowers are pink in bud opening to white, carried along gracefully arching branches, creating a lavish springtime display that follows later than many other cherries. Rich green foliage offers summer appeal and then turns warm shades of orange and red in autumn, making this deciduous tree beautiful across several seasons. Its gently spreading, vase-like crown suits parks, streets and garden spaces alike. RHS Recommended: Award of Garden Merit.

Ultimate height: 4m (13ft). Ultimate spread: 6m (19.6ft).

How to Grow
Plant cherry trees in any moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Incorporate plenty of compost or well-rotted manure prior to planting. Choose a final position in full sun.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Water Prunus trees regularly until fully established. Ornamental cherries require little aftercare. Simply remove any diseased, damaged or crossing shoots to maintain a healthy framework. When pruning cherries it is preferable to wait until midsummer to avoid the risk of ‘silver leaf’ infection. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant in spring, taking care not to mound mulch up against the stem.
