How to Grow
Bareroots should be planted at the earliest opportunity following delivery. Grow peonies in a sunny or semi shaded position on fertile, moist, well drained soil. Peony plants prefer a heavy soil that is rich in organic matter. Improve the soil prior to planting by adding plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost prior to planting. Plant herbaceous peonies so that the top of the crown is just 5cm (2") below the soil surface, taking care not to plant too deeply as this may prevent or delay peonies from flowering.

These plants are lifted from the nursery field when dormant, and sent to you in late autumn or spring for planting. They often look dead on arrival, but they are just resting in the dormant period and will establish quickly for a strong start in the garden come spring. Set out in prepared soil in holes wide enough and deep enough to lay out the roots. Tread down the planting soil to knock out air pockets. Water well to settle. Apply a mulch to protect roots from cold temperatures. If conditions prevent immediate planting, set roughly into loose soil or a pot of compost (‘heeling in’) to protect the roots. The growth points of most bare root perennials should be set about an inch below the soil surface. New growth will appear in spring.

More Info
Feed and water peonies regularly until plants are fully established. In exposed positions the stems may require staking to support the large peony flowers. Cut back old foliage in autumn. When growing peonies on light sandy soil, a spring mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost may be applied around the base of the plant, taking care not to bury the crown as this may delay flowering. Caution: All parts of peony are harmful if eaten.
