Description
The best known of all pears, ‘Conference’ is excellent eaten as a dessert pear but also exceptional when cooked. The long bell shaped fruits with firm flesh can be eaten hard or fully ripe with a smooth juicy flavour. Trees crop late in the season from October to November, and the fruit will store until January. Enjoy ‘Conference’ pears at their best by picking them slightly under-ripe, store them in a cool place and bring indoors to ripen slowly.

  • Pear and Quince rootstocks:
  • Quince C/ Quince Eline/ Quince Adams - Dwarf reaching a mature height of up to 2.5-3m (8-10')
  • Quince A - Semi vigorous reaching a mature height of up to 3m (10') to 4m (13')

This variety is partially self-fertile. For the heaviest crops it is best grown with another variety. If you only have room for one tree then make sure that a neighbour has a tree close by that can act as a suitable pollinator.

Estimated time to cropping once planted: 2 years.
Estimated time to best yields: 5 years.

Please note: Patio trees are derived from clonal selections for dwarfism which ensures a particularly compact growth habit of around 1m (39") in height.

How to Grow

Plant patio fruit trees in containers holding at least 30 litres of good quality compost such as John Innes No.3. Alternatively plant them in any well drained soil in a sheltered sunny position. Plant fruit trees at their original soil level, firm them into the ground and water well.

More Info

Feed and water containerised plants regularly. Prune only the tips of the main branches by one third in winter. Some sub branches can be pruned out when necessary at the union where they join the main branch, to allow new sub branches to take their place.

In order to produce the best quality, largest fruits, the apples and pears should be thinned in July leaving two fruits remaining per cluster.
