Mesembs Species Mix is a living collection of nature’s cleverest survivors. Originating from southern Africa and Namibia, this fascinating group of succulents is prized for rocky patterns and textures, unusual leaf shapes and often striking flowers.
Intricate camouflage markings allow the plants to mimic stones and pebbles, helping them avoid grazing animals in their harsh native habitats. Their juicy leaves appear in extraordinary forms, from rounded pebble-like bodies to tight rosettes with angular, crimped or finger-like foliage. Remarkably efficient, they recycle moisture by drawing water from old leaves to fuel new growth, enabling them to thrive where other plants fail. Long-lasting, daisy-like flowers in bright shades of yellow, orange and pink add seasonal drama, while low water needs make them excellent houseplants. Height: 2.5-10cm (1-4in).

Grow on a very bright, south or east-facing windowsill in free-draining cactus compost.
These plants have very low watering requirements and the timing of watering is critical as strict dormancy periods must be observed. Watering too much or at the wrong time will cause the plant to rot and die.
Water very sparingly during the active growth period – this is usually about May until October. Pots should be allowed to dry out between waterings. Cease all watering from October and throughout winter, keeping the plants completely dry. Some Mesembs are summer dormant so check your variety.
Commence watering again in late spring only when the old pair of leaves has completely withered away and the new leaves are well developed – this normally occurs around May.
