If you love magnolias but wish they didn’t have such as short season, this is the perfect variety for you. Magnolia ‘March Till Frost’ fulfils its name, delivering masses of blooms in March/April and then continuously producing sporadic bursts of flowers until the first autumn frosts. A liliflora type, the upright flowers don’t open completely, forming elegant, tulip-shaped blooms that change colour as the season progresses. The first flowers are pale pink, the later ones deepening in colour to carmine. The inner colour of the tepals is rose-pink to white, forming a striking contrast with the darker exterior. The flowers are followed by erect, candle-like, magenta seed pods that contrast beautifully with the foliage, adding a second season of interest. Magnolia ‘March Till Frost’ forms a small, upright, well-branching tree with glossy, dark green leaves. It makes a stunning deciduous shrub or tree for a small to medium garden. Height and spread: 2- 5m (6.5-16ft).

Plant in a sunny or semi shaded position that recieves a minimum of 4-6 hours of sunshine per day and is sheltered from cold winds and hard spring frosts. Suitable for acid soils only that are rich, moist and well-drained. Incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to improve the soil prior to planting, mixing it thoroughly and deeply. Magnolia plants establish quicker when their roots are shaded. Following planting, apply a mulch of rotted bark chips, manure or garden compost, taking care not to mound it around the stem of the plant. When growing in a patio container use a blend of ericaceous compost mixed with soil based compost.
For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.
Water regularly throughout the growing season until fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted bark chips or garden compost to the base of the plant. Fertilise once a year in the spring with a slow release tree and shrub fertiliser.
Protect from cold winds and hard frosts which can cause foliar damage.
Plants in pots will be at increased risk of the root ball becoming completely frozen and should be moved into a sheltered location, conservatory or cool greenhouse over winter.
Tolerates pruning well. The best time to prune is after blooming. Remove old or diseased wood and trim to shape.
