  • RHS Award of Garden Merit
A fast growing tree with a long period of interest that will delight the senses! Tiny red flowers decorate the naked branches of the Katsura Tree in spring, before the young rounded, leaves break bud in a glorious display of bronze pink foliage. As summer progresses, the foliage colours to a fresh shade of bright green, before changing once again with the autumn to a vivid gold and orange. Even the fallen autumn leaves will provide interest by filling the air with a sugary fragrance of candy-floss that is almost irresistible. Cercidiphyllum japonicum holds an RHS AGM and makes a superb multi-stemmed specimen tree for a small garden or woodland area. Supplied in 9cm pot. Ultimate Height and spread: 10m (32ft).

Feed and water katsura tree regularly until fully established. Once established, katsura require little attention except for the occasional removal of damaged, diseased and misplaced shoots in late autumn and winter. Cercidiphyllum japonicum tends to naturally form several main stems, however it may be trained to have a central leader if desired.
Repot Katsura tree into a larger pot using a soil based compost such as John Innes No 3, and grow on in cool conditions until large enough to be planted in its final position. When Cercidiphyllum japonicum is well grown, transplant into any non alkaline, rich, moist but free draining soil. Incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or compost into the soil prior to planting. Choose a position in sun or dappled shade with shelter from cold winds.

Specimen trees 2015-04-17

arrived as 20 inch trees in April 2012 and kept in large pots. They are now 5 foot high multi branched trees that have been planted in the garden, with no pests, diseases or nibbled leaves making this a specimen tree with leaves that change with the seasons. Beautiful.

T&M replied on 2015-04-17: Thank you for your review and for taking the time to share your wonderful comments. I hope we can continue to be of service.

Surviving the extreme NE of Scotland weather 2014-05-31

Liviing just south of John O'Groats and battered by the east winds from Siberia, I was sceptical about the hardiness of the Katsura tree. However, the two I bought have come throught the winter (left out in the weather to survive or perish) and are now growing away nicely.

Helpful Thompson and Morgan 2012-05-29

After buying this as a present for my husband, after a little while the tree died on us and after only one quick e-mail we received a new plant with-in a few days. The new one is doing lovely and I can only say thank you for the quick and curtious staff.
