Description

First Editions® transforms your garden with a premium range of trend-led shrubs that deliver style, strength, and year-round appeal. Each variety has been carefully selected through rigorous trials to ensure exceptional performance—boasting stronger blooms, earlier and longer flowering, improved hardiness, and outstanding resistance to heat and disease. From vibrant displays to reliable structure and natural privacy, these shrubs bring colour, texture, and balance to every corner of your outdoor space while thriving in a wide range of conditions.

The first ever truly dark-leaved mophead hydrangea, Hydrangea 'First Editions® Eclipse®' offers a stunning combination of richly coloured flowers paired with dramatic black foliage. The intense purple-black leaves hold their intense colour even in warm, sunny climates, forming a dramatic backdrop to large flowerheads that range from dark amethyst to cranberry red depending on soil pH. This prize-winning sensation makes an eye-catching focal shrub for a mixed border, or large container. Pair it with yellow foliage for an exciting contrast. Height and spread: 90-150cm (3-5ft).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Hydrangea macrophylla prefers a sunny or semi shaded position, with shelter from cold, drying winds. Grow hydrangea plants in any rich fertile, moist soil. Improve the soil prior to planting by adding with plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Alternatively plant hydrangea macrophylla in patio containers in soil based compost.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Water regularly until plants are fully established. Leave the faded hydrangea flower heads in place until the new buds swell in spring to protect the delicate buds from frost damage. Prune after flowering, reducing the stems to restrict their growth to the available space and to improve the shape of the plant. After pruning hydrangeas, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant. Caution: Contact with hydrangea foliage may irritate the skin and eyes and all parts are harmful if eaten.
