Description
Hydrangea macrophylla 'Early Blue' begins to flower weeks before most varieties, and continues throughout the summer. Dark blue florets form large mophead blooms at tip of each stem. The skeletal seedheads persist long after the flowers have faded, providing continuous interest right through to winter. As with all macrophyllas varieties, an alkaline soil will produce more red-purple shades. Grow this variety in acid borders or containers of ericaceous soil to maintain the best blue colour. Height and spread: 120cm (48").

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

The blue flowers will take on a pink hue as they fade through autumn and may also be affected by alkaline tap water or soil. For the deepest blue flowers right through the season we recommend the use of Hydrangea Colourant

How to Grow
Hydrangea macrophylla prefers a sunny or semi shaded position, with shelter from cold, drying winds. Grow hydrangea plants in any rich fertile, moist soil. Improve the soil prior to planting by adding with plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Alternatively plant hydrangea macrophylla in patio containers in soil based compost.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

Water regularly until plants are fully established. Leave the faded hydrangea flower heads in place until the new buds swell in spring to protect the delicate buds from frost damage. Prune after flowering, reducing the stems to restrict their growth to the available space and to improve the shape of the plant. After pruning hydrangeas, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant. Caution: Contact with hydrangea foliage may irritate the skin and eyes and all parts are harmful if eaten.
