Hydrangea paniculata 'Living Red Velvet' is a stunning compact variety of panicle hydrangea. This remarkable plant is celebrated for its vibrant, deep raspberry-red flower clusters, which become even more intense as they mature. With a long flowering season that spans from mid to late summer, this hydrangea not only adds a splash of bold color to gardens but also showcases impressive resilience and performance throughout the growing season.
The large, cone-shaped panicles of 'Living Red Velvet' begin their journey as delicate pale green blooms before transitioning to striking raspberry-red hues. These eye-catching flowers maintain their vivid color well into early autumn, providing a continuous display of beauty. The shrub itself is characterized by its neat, bushy form and upright stems, which effectively support the weight of the abundant flower heads, preventing any unsightly drooping.
Thriving in full sun to partial shade, this hydrangea prefers fertile, moist, yet well-drained soil, making it a versatile choice for various garden settings. Its compact growth habit makes it ideal for borders, containers, and low hedging, while its strong performance ensures reliable flowering year after year, even after harsh winters. Hardy in the UK, 'Living Red Velvet' can withstand severe frosts and cold conditions without the need for protective measures. A light pruning in late winter or early spring is all that is required to remove spent blooms and promote fresh growth, making it a low-maintenance addition to any garden. Water regularly until plants are fully established.Â
Pruning:
Hydrangea paniculata flowers on the current season’s growth and will flower better if pruned annually. Establish a permanent framework to the desired height and every spring prune back all growth to this framework. At the same time, remove any dead or damaged growth. Â
For even larger flowers on erect stems, plants can be pruned back to a very low framework of only about a foot high.
After pruning hydrangeas, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes, harmful if eaten.
