Rare and highly sought after, this is the first and original black hyacinth! Available again due to popular demand - you won't find this variety for sale anywhere else! Launched to a frenzy of interest at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2005, Hyacinth 'Midnight Mystic'® was soon completely sold out. A real breakthrough in breeding, Thompson & Morgan spent 16 years developing just three mother bulbs and the result is this stunning, unusual hardy black hyacinth with a heavenly scent. Try it in contemporary silver patio pots, or grow it in beds and borders. Either way, make sure it's on show for all to enjoy! Height: 20cm (8"). Spread: 8cm (3"). Bulb size: 15/16.

For the darkest black blooms, Hyacinth 'Midnight Mystic'® must be grown outdoors, as flowers will appear purple in colour when 'forced' for indoor cultivation.

Water container-grown hyacinths with care. Avoid over wetting the compost or allowing it to dry out. After flowering, indoor displays can be planted out doors where they will bloom the following spring. Hyacinths that are planted outdoors are virtually maintenance free. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes, harmful if eaten.

Grow hyacinths in moist, fertile well drained soil in sun or semi shade. Plant hyacinth bulbs approximately 10cm (4") deep and at a distance of 8cm (3") apart.

To grow hyacinths for indoor displays, plant them in containers of bulb fibre or potting compost with the tip of the bulb just visible above the soil surface. Position them in a cool garage or other well ventilated, dark position at a maximum temperature of 7°C (44°F) for around 6 weeks. Water bulbs only when necessary in order to keep the compost moist. When the growing shoots reach a height of 3cm (1"), move the containers to a cool bright position indoors.

Not black, but purple. 2016-02-21

These are nice, but are not black, they are dark purple. Flowers were there for a couple of weeks before they deteriorated. The service from T&M was fine, but these are not colour as described.

T&M replied on 2016-02-21: Thank you for your review. I am sorry to learn of the disappointing results you have had with the colour of the flowers that your seeds produced. If you would like to contact our Customer Care Department at ccare@thompson-morgan.com, one of our agents will be more than happy to look in to this further for you.

Mine are purple too 2015-12-04

Mine are purple too - the smell is lovely though. Grown outside as per instructions.

T&M replied on 2015-04-13: Thank you for your review and for taking the time to share your wonderful comments. I hope we can continue to be of service.

Not Black 2015-07-04

These are not black, they are a beautiful flower and easy to grow, smell wonderful but are a deep royal purple not a hint of black to be seen. A real shame as I love black flowers.

T&M replied on 2015-04-10: Thank you for your review. I am very sorry to hear of your disappointment with your order. If you would like to contact our Customer care team on ccare@thompson-morgan.com, one of our agents will be happy to investigate this further for you.

Disappearing bulbs. 2015-01-10

MIne were very dark purple and looked stunning against the golden stone on my rockery - I have just returned from holiday to find a big hole in the rockery and my bulbs have gone (eaten by rabbits I think). Oh dear - and I can't order any more as they are out of stock.

T&M replied on 2015-10-05: Thank you very much for your review. I am glad that you have been happy with your purchase, although I am sorry to hear that they have been eaten. Hopefully we will have these for sale again soon. If you would like to enter your email address, we will let you know as soon as they are available again.

Good. 2013-04-29

Very easy to grow. They are infact a very dark purple, can also see black there aswell, from a distance they seem quite black, close up, a lovely deep purple, with a lovely shiny sheen, I have got 18 of these out, look very nice, and when I sat out, every so often, there was a wift of lovely scent. A tad expensive, but, rare, and worth it. Thanks TM for these.

Expensive 2011-08-22

A great shame about the price. The three Bulbs I planted certainly delivered the goods .I must admit part of me was expecting dark blue but these were so close to black in colour. They produced lovely full heads of flowers despite the very hard winter and frosts. It will be interesting to see what happens next spring

blackest flower i've seen 2011-08-21

i was a bit dubious about these when i first got them, thinking that the picture had been altered in some way, But when these actually flowered the first time i was blown away they were almost pure black, with an excellent scent too, definitely recommend..
