Sow from March-June or July-September for overwintering, whenever the land is vacant or there is an area which requires increased fertility. Scatter the seed over the soil surface and carefully rake in or alternatively sow thinly about 12mm (1/2in) deep, in narrow drills which are about 15cm (6in) apart.
Leave seedlings to grow to about 23cm (9in) and then dig in. Plants can be allowed to grow taller whereby their root system will draw up further minerals. Taller plants will need chopping up prior to digging in, but will provide increased bulky organic matter to the soil.

Green gold 2011-09-23

My allotment plot is heavy clay. I have been using green manure fro several years to reduce waterlogging and improve the soil. What can I say? - it works like green gold and mty soil is much better every year I come to it. I even find it quite satsifying to have something otther than weeds growing all winter as the ground is generally too poor to overwinter green veg - yet! Short 'shelf life' is the only downside.
