Description

If you are a garlic fan, then this Garlic Duo provides a tasty pair of some of our best garlic varieties with both a softneck and a hardneck variety.  These garlics grow well in UK climates, will store for a long time and give you the opportunity to try different culinary delights straight from your own garden. Duo comprises:

  • Garlic ‘Kingsland Wight’ (Autumn planting, Hardneck) is a perfectly formed, white skinned bulb with pink cloves. One of the ‘Creole’ varieties of garlic, it originates from Spain and is prized for its superior taste. Hardneck varieties of garlic are generally agreed to be more complex in flavour than the softneck varieties commonly found in the supermarket, with each variety having its own unique characteristics. Has good storage life and should keep you cooking with home-grown garlic until the February after harvest. Height: 60cm (24"). Spread: 15cm (6").
  • Garlic 'Solent Wight' (Spring/Autumn planting, Softneck) is known for its exceptional flavour and bouquet which it retains during cooking. This increasingly popular and reliable softneck variety is well suited to the British climate and one of the best for its overall eating and keeping qualities. Height: 60cm (24"). Spread: 15cm (6").

How to Grow
Plant garlic in rows in any well drained soil in full sun. It is important that the soil does not become waterlogged so incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to improve drainage and feed the soil. On particularly heavy soils, plant garlic in raised beds. Carefully split the bulb into individual cloves. Plant each clove at a depth of 2cm (1”) below the surface of the soil and 10cm (4”) apart, leaving 45cm (18”) between each row.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Weed rows of garlic regularly and protect crops from birds by covering them with netting. Garlic is undemanding and will only require watering during particularly dry periods. Harvest garlic from July, when the leaves begin to turn yellow, by loosening them from the ground with a trowel. Gently wash and dry garlic bulbs, then place them in a warm dry position to dry out, prior to storing them. Bulbs can then be stored in good condition for up to 3 months.
