Description

Fatsia polycarpa is a striking evergreen shrub that captivates with its dramatic foliage and unique architectural shape, making it a popular choice for creating a lush, tropical ambiance in sheltered gardens. Its large, deeply lobed palmate leaves are not only leathery and dark green but also add a significant textural element to the landscape. This plant stands out for its ability to thrive in shaded areas, where its bold leaves can truly shine, providing a vibrant contrast to the more subdued colors of other shade-loving plants.

In late autumn to early winter, Fatsia polycarpa produces elegant clusters of creamy-white flowers that rise upright above the foliage, adding a touch of seasonal interest. These flowers are followed by small black berries, which can attract birds and other wildlife, enhancing the ecological value of your garden. This shrub is particularly effective when used as a specimen plant, drawing the eye in woodland-style gardens or subtropical settings, where its exotic appearance can be fully appreciated.

To ensure optimal growth, Fatsia polycarpa thrives in partial to full shade and prefers humus-rich, moist, yet well-drained soil. It benefits from being positioned in a sheltered spot, away from cold, drying winds, which can be detrimental, especially in harsher climates. While this plant is hardy in the milder regions of the UK, young specimens may require frost protection during colder months to help them establish and flourish. With the right care, Fatsia polycarpa can be a stunning addition to any garden, bringing a touch of the tropics to your outdoor space. Height: 400 cm (13 ft). Spread: 200 cm (6.5 ft).
