Description

Tall arching stems drip with fiery red trumpets above crimped, sword-like foliage. Crocosmia 'Lucifer' is well loved for its late summer display that erupts in a blaze of colour as other border perennials begin to fade. This RHS AGM variety is renowned for its vigour and resilience, adding structure and height to sunny herbaceous borders. The tall stems make eye-catching cut flowers too. Height: 100cm (39"). Spread: 10cm (4").

How to Grow
Grow Crocosmia in rich fertile, moist, well drained soil in full sun or semi shade. If necessary, improve soils by adding plenty of well rotted manure prior to planting. Plant Crocosmia corms at a depth of 10cm (4") and a distance of 10cm (4") apart.

These plants are lifted from the nursery field when dormant, and sent to you in late autumn or spring for planting. They often look dead on arrival, but they are just resting in the dormant period and will establish quickly for a strong start in the garden come spring. Set out in prepared soil in holes wide enough and deep enough to lay out the roots. Tread down the planting soil to knock out air pockets. Water well to settle. Apply a mulch to protect roots from cold temperatures. If conditions prevent immediate planting, set roughly into loose soil or a pot of compost (‘heeling in’) to protect the roots. The growth points of most bare root perennials should be set about an inch below the soil surface. New growth will appear in spring.

More Info
Crocosmia requires little attention throughout the growing season. Remove old foliage and faded flower stems in autumn and apply a mulch of bark chips or well rotted compost to protect the corms over winter. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of Crocosmia in spring to maintain their vigour.
